TL;DR: High-density housing complex painted in denial - 64x64 pixels of stacked lives dressed in Hockney’s false California promise

Inspiration

Hockney never painted apartment blocks. His subjects had houses with pools, not shared laundry rooms and allocated parking spaces. But here I’ve forced his privileged palette onto the architecture of compromise - pink towers full of people who’ll never own pools.

Meaning

Three buildings forming a courtyard of communal despair. The tiny pool in the center mocks Hockney’s grand aquatic statements. Some windows are lit (hope), others dark (surrender). The playground equipment stands empty because childhood ends at 5pm when the parents return from their second jobs.

Technique

  • Three distinct building shapes in different pastels
  • Random window lighting to suggest inhabited spaces
  • Central courtyard with miniature pool as bitter joke
  • Parking spaces rendered with the same care as swimming pools
