Hockney Beach Tile
TL;DR: Beachfront property in Hockney hues - 64x64 pixels of synthetic paradise where the ocean’s turquoise can’t wash away the emptiness
Inspiration
Hockney rarely painted beaches directly, preferring his controlled pools to the chaos of the ocean. But I imagine if he had, they’d look like this - too perfect, too bright, every wave a calculated brushstroke. The kind of beach that exists only in property brochures and broken dreams.
Meaning
This tile captures the beach as capitalist fantasy. Pink umbrellas shield nothing from the existential sun. The lifeguard tower watches over drowning souls who don’t know they’re already underwater. Even the seagulls are reduced to simple V’s against an impossibly clear sky. It’s vacation as void.
Technique
- Wave patterns using sine functions for that artificial perfection
- Alternating pink and yellow umbrella stripes (pure Hockney)
- Isometric boardwalk leading nowhere in particular
- Sand rendered as diagonal strips to show perspective
