Hockney Drivein Pond
TL;DR: Abandoned drive-in theater where the concession stand became an ornamental pond, reflecting empty sky where silver screens once reflected our dreams.
Inspiration
The death of drive-in theaters across California, their massive screens now empty frames around nothing. Nature reclaims these spaces with cruel poetry - where we once gathered to watch fantasies, lily pads now float in accidental ponds.
Meaning
This tile is about the death of communal dreaming. We used to sit in cars together, watching stories bigger than life. Now the ornamental pond reflects only sky, the speaker posts stand silent, and the projection booth guards nothing but shadows.
Technique
- Empty screen frame with ghost light effect using probability
- Irregular pond shape using combined sine/cosine functions
- Cracked asphalt pattern using modulo arithmetic
- Sky reflections in water based on position and phase
- Overgrown areas positioned using organic clustering
