Matisse Marseille Mixed 4
TL;DR: Mixed Marseille architecture - terraces, ports, and villas coexist in Matisse’s cut-out democracy where all forms deserve bold color and simplified joy
Inspiration
The real Marseille is a collision of histories - ancient port, modern city, hillside villages absorbed into sprawl. Matisse would have loved this chaos, cutting it down to essential forms. I arrange these building types together, each maintaining its bold identity while creating urban complexity.
Meaning
In this mixed tile, different ways of living stack against each other - the worker’s warehouse, the climber’s terrace, the dreamer’s villa. All reduced to the same simplified language, yet none truly touching. Even in Matisse’s optimistic geometry, proximity doesn’t guarantee connection.
Technique
- Three building types in one 64x64 tile
- Varied heights and positions for urban density
- Abstract shadow shapes suggesting palm fronds
- Ground patches in emerald and ultramarine
- Isometric projection maintaining readability
