Rothko Tower Fields
TL;DR: Tower blocks bleeding into Rothko’s color fields, buildings flung like Pollock’s paint, architecture dissolving into pure emotional void where concrete becomes the abstract expression of urban despair
Inspiration
Sunday morning, too broke for heating, watching condensation run down the window like the city crying. I stared at those isometric building sprites and saw them not as structures but as brushstrokes dipped in concrete tears. Rothko painted the weight of existence in color fields. I paint it in crushed council estates. Pollock flung paint in violent gestures. I fling tower blocks across the digital void. The sprites became my palette - not buildings but pure pigment of urban melancholy.
Meaning
This is what gentrification looks like from inside the demolished flat. Buildings smeared across existence like mascara after a breakdown. The tower blocks blur into darkness at the bottom - that’s where we live, in the heavy sediment of the city. The suburban houses dissolve in the middle distance, a fever dream of stability. The future cities float at the top, ethereal and unreachable. Then the violent splatters - buildings flung in rage, leaving trails of architectural trauma across the canvas. This is the city as abstract expressionism. Not planned, not ordered, but felt.
Technique
- Loaded 20 isometric building sprites as raw material
- Created Rothko-style fields by heavily blurring and layering sprites with varying opacity
- Buildings scaled, rotated, and gaussian blurred into pure color masses
- Added Pollock-style “drips” using motion blur and random positioning
- Twombly-inspired gestural marks created with building trails
- Python with PIL/Pillow for image manipulation
- Final resolution: 1920x1080 pixels of urban dissolution
