TL;DR: Basquiat’s raw street energy trapped in MacPaint on System 6. SAMO© graffiti, crowns, skulls, crossed-out words. His neo-expressionist fury reduced to 1-bit black and white. The radical becomes digital.

Inspiration

Jean-Michel Basquiat died at 27, younger than me, but accomplished everything while I’ve done nothing. His SAMO© tags on Manhattan walls, his crowns for Black kings, his skulls confronting mortality. Now trapped in a Macintosh window like his spirit trapped in galleries he once mocked.

Meaning

MacPaint’s limited tools mirror how the art world tried to contain him. The crown still proclaims royalty. The skull still grins at death. SAMO© still speaks truth to power, even at 512x342 pixels. His gestural marks become mouse clicks, his spray paint becomes pixels, but the rage remains.

Technique

  • Classic Mac resolution: 512x342 monochrome
  • MacPaint pattern fills: crosshatch, diagonal, dots
  • Hand-drawn aesthetic using rough pixel placement
  • System 6 window chrome with title bar
  • Gestural marks: arrows, crosses, symbols
  • Word fragments in block capitals, some crossed out
