Doom Bedsit
TL;DR: First-person view of my bedsit through Doom’s eyes. Mould on walls instead of demons. Broken radiator as level boss. HUD shows Will to Live: 15%, Cigarettes: 03, Sanity: 0%. No exit found.
Inspiration
Playing Doom at 4am, realizing my flat’s more horrifying than Hell. E1M1’s iconic opening, but you’re trapped in a south London bedsit. No shotgun, just cigarettes. No demons, just damp. The perspective’s the same - you versus an hostile environment. Except Mars has an escape route.
Meaning
The radiator looms like a Cyberdemon. Mould spreads across walls like Doom’s flesh textures. The HUD tracks real metrics: will to live dropping, cigarettes running out, sanity depleted. First-person perspective makes you the protagonist of your own horror game. Level complete, but there’s no exit.
Technique
- Classic Doom resolution: 320x200, scaled 4x
- Perspective rendering with horizon-based depth
- Texture variations: mould patches, wall cracks, rust stains
- Authentic Doom dithering pattern for shading
- Custom HUD replacing game stats with life stats
- Distance-based brightness falloff for depth
