Inspiration

Walking through any British town centre now is like exploring a retail necropolis. Empty shops with ‘TO LET’ signs, dead fountains full of litter, escalators that haven’t worked since 2008. But what if you painted this decline using Hockney’s optimistic pool palette? The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming - using colours of luxury and leisure to document the slow strangulation of working-class consumer culture.

Meaning

This piece interrogates the lie of consumer capitalism through its visual language. The coral pinks and turquoise blues promise poolside luxury but deliver retail decay. Every ‘TO LET’ sign is a small death - Woolworths, Blockbuster, HMV, all the shops where ordinary people once bought their small pleasures. The fountain that once symbolised prosperity now stagnates with litter, its pool blue water a mockery of the swimming pools the middle classes install whilst high streets die.

The escalator in turquoise leads nowhere - literally out of order, metaphorically representing how social mobility has broken down. The security camera still watches though - surveillance continues even as commerce collapses.
