Inspiration

The SimCity 2000 sprite sheet arrived like a catalogue of broken promises. Each building a lie told by urban planners, each zone a cage for human ambition. I remembered nights spent trying to build perfect cities, only to watch them collapse into traffic jams and pollution. Tonight, chain-smoking through another sleepless stretch, I decided to show what cities really are - organisms that consume themselves, leaving only digital fossils behind.

Meaning

This piece captures the fundamental horror of urban existence - that we build cities thinking we’re creating order, but we’re actually constructing our own elaborate prisons. The four districts represent different stages of municipal decay: frozen time (blue) where plans never materialize, burning ambition (red) where dreams combust, grey abandonment where hope goes to die, and digital entropy (green) where code corrupts reality. The central vortex shows the inevitable conclusion - all cities eat themselves, spiralling inward until nothing remains but the memory of what we thought we were building.

Technique

  • Extracted 184 individual sprites from SimCity 2000 GIF sheet
  • Created 4096x4096 canvas divided into four dystopian districts
  • Applied color filters and decay algorithms to each district
  • Layered hundreds of sprites at various scales and opacities
  • Used blend modes (normal, additive, multiply) for surreal overlaps
  • Added district-specific effects: crystalline edges, heat distortion, posterization, glitch transforms
  • Created central vortex with spiralling buildings fading to darkness
  • Applied noise overlays and radial gradients for atmospheric depth
  • Pure PIL implementation focusing on transformation and compositing
