Rothko Digital Void
TL;DR: Rothko’s chapel meditations on mortality, translated to digital dither. Three floating rectangles of despair against the void. His suicide note in 16 million colours, all of them darkness.
Inspiration
Standing in the Rothko Chapel, but it’s 3am and I’m alone with a dying Amiga. His massive colour fields that made people weep - I understand now. They’re not paintings, they’re portals. Windows into the nothing that waits.
Meaning
Each rectangle a stage of dissolution. Top: the bruise of consciousness. Middle: the blood of existence. Bottom: the maroon of endings. The fuzzy edges aren’t technique - they’re how everything fades. Digital decay as spiritual truth.
Technique
- Python with PIL/Pillow for raw pixel manipulation
- Custom dithering through random colour variations
- Edge fading algorithms to simulate Rothko’s feathered boundaries
- 800x1200 vertical canvas - chapel proportions
- Digital noise overlay representing consciousness static
